The Addams Family Musical | Opening Night

When you’re an Addams *click click*

I am a theatre fanatic, for years my grandma would take me to a show for my birthday of Christmas. I’ve seen so many adaptations, musicals and plays and have loved them each individually. Some have left me with questions and others have left tears in my eyes.

On the 18th July Poppy and I headed to The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to sit and be sung to by Wednesday, Puglsey, Gomez, Morticia and the whole Addams family. We ran in a storm to The Mayflower foyer and up in the lift to out seat in the circle. We were middle of the stage with a perfect view. There was a storm in the Addams family so it felt real.

The Addams Family musical will leave you wanting to raid your Halloween costume box for outfit inspo right away. I need to wear my ‘witch please’ earrings right now.

(Poppy and I after the show)

The plot was exactly what you want from a musical. Strange girl meets normal boy and their families meet over dinner. Family dynamics are tested and hilarity ensues. It’s like you or I meeting your boyfriends family but amped up 100%.

In alot of musicals I’ve seen have filler songs. Songs added to the score to fill space, that don’t add to the story. But the Addams family wasn’t like that, I really felt every song had a purpose and a place in the story. Questions were explained in song. Festers solo song was very beautiful and unexpected. The ensemble cast were hilarious and I think on stage nearly 100% of the time. I’m a fashion student though and though so looked at each characters costume in detail thoughtout the performance. I love costumes because they say who the character is even before they start to speak. (SPOILER: the moon’s costume is incredible)

I love watching It’s Way Past My Bedtime which is Carrie Hope fletchers youtube channel, if you didn’t know already she plays Wednesday. She’s truly and amazing singer and watching her belt live is amazing, the whole theatre was silent just in awe of her. I can’t sing like her so can’t give any critique but let me tell you, she’s amazing. Her Wednesday costume was so intricate and that corset. How can she sing in a corset?

When ever I go to the theatre I always get a program, and i tuck it safely into my little box of souvenir brochures. It’s the perfect keepsake. I thought I’d share with you my favourite page. Just look at Lurch!!! Look at him. One of the characters, who got the most laughs and after the final bow, came out of character and gave a little something something to the applauding audience.

Go see The Addams Family musical if you can. It’s at The Mayflower until the 29th then it goes to Cardiff. It’s totally worth it. website here
